Gym shorts: the perfect mix of comfort and style for every season

Why exactly do people wear gym shorts and what exactly makes gym shorts so appealing especially for females?

Well a while back, when you thought of gym wear what came to mind were intense workouts or fitness fanatics, but gym shorts have gained a huge amount of popularity in the last few years not just for their simplicity but also the fact that they’ve evolved and become more than just gym wear.

From parks to streets and even fashion runways, gym shorts have become an all-encompassing outfit that blends comfort, style and versatility so well.

In this article, we’d be taking a deep dive and considering some of the many reasons why gym shorts are now the ‘hot cake’ in the world of fashion.

Gym shorts are designed to be comfortable, functional and breathable which makes them a go-to for any occasion where the goal is comfort.

They are also perfect for summer and warm weathers in general. Because they are made from materials like cotton, nylon or polyester which are lightweight and breathable, they keep you dry and cool even when it’s a sunny day.

Most are also loose fitted so they allow movement with little to zero restrictions and make you feel at ease no matter the occasion.

Effortless Style

Another reason why gym shorts are so appealing especially for females is the fact that they are simple but very fashionable. They go well with just about any and everything.

Whether it’s a blazer, a crop top, a t-shirt or even a hoodie, they go and they go really well. Zero effort but high fashion quality. They are mostly paired with sneakers and that look? Chef’s kiss!

Versatility Beyond the Gym

This might be the most important reason why gym shorts are so appealing. The fact that they are not restricted to just the gym.

Although they were designed specifically for athletic activities, they have evolved and made their way to different settings. From relaxed meetings to beach dates, fashion runways and dinner dates.

If you need to step out to a casual meeting, they could be easily paired with a blazer, but if it’s a weekend outing, a tank top would do. The fact that they can go with almost everything in your wardrobe and are adaptable all year long make them so appealing.

 Inclusivity

Their ability to become a streetwear outfit or night out aesthetic show how far they have evolved in terms of fashion. And the beautiful thing is that this evolution might just be the beginning. From sneakers to blazers and even minimalist jewellery, gym shorts are becoming fashion statement outfits as well.

The original Nike Air Rift, released in 1996, drew inspiration from the barefoot running techniques of athletes in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, and tabi toe (split toe) that allows natural foot movement – That split-toe feature echoes the famous Maison Margiela Tabi shoes (inspired by traditional Japanese tabi socks).

Key features include:

  •  tabi toe for split-toe look and natural foot movement.
  • Breathable mesh upper (in the initial release) for a close fit.
  • Single midfoot strap for easy entry and a secure fit.
  • Minimalist midsole that keeps you close to the ground, reflecting to the original Rift’s barefoot design concept.

The sneaker is suitable for active wear. Kim Kardashian herself said: “There’s something so powerful and beautiful about a ballet flat, which is why reimagining the Nike Rift for the first NikeSKIMS sneaker felt perfect. The Rift isn’t just a shoe, it’s a 90s icon that women everywhere have fallen in love with.”

The debut Rift Mesh (in colors like black) released at $150 and sold out quickly at select retailers. Follow-up drops, like the Rift Satin (with satin uppers in black and silt red), are slated for February 5, 2026, as part of SKIMS’ Spring ’26 collection inspired by modern ballerinas (featuring campaigns with BLACKPINK’s LISA). This extends into apparel, accessories, and now footwear.

Pharrell Williams revealed Louis Vuitton’s Fall/Winter 2026 menswear collection at Paris Men’s Fashion Week, delivering a presentation. The show took place outside the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, inside a large cube structure that immediately set it apart from the usual runway format.

The collection focused on quiet elegance. With its glass walls and clean lines set against artificial grass, the space felt more like a modern home than a runway, adding a quiet sense of ease as the models passed through. It felt more like watching scenes from a film than a traditional fashion show. The collection stayed true to a grounded palette, built around beige, brown, grey, black, denim, and cream. From time to time, soft pops of colour including red, yellow, pink, baby blue, and green added warmth.

The clothes blended classic tailoring with comfort. Long coats, double-breasted jackets, loose trousers, parkas layered over suits, and relaxed knits showed Pharrell’s continued interest in wearable luxury.

The show drew a high-profile crowd. Guests included John Legend, Future, Skepta, SZA, Usher, Jackson Wang, and France’s First Lady, Brigitte Macron. K-pop star BamBam of GOT7 also made his runway debut.
