Let’s be honest: long-haul flights are not so exciting, but the destination is something to look forward to. Between dry cabin air, cramped seats, and hours of recycled air, stepping off the plane looking good and feeling fresh is almost like a fantasy. Which doesn’t have to be that way.

Well with a few smart moves, which I’ll be sharing, you can land looking like you’ve just had a facial—not a 14-hour economy nap sandwiched between two strangers. Read through and get ready for your next trip.

Dress Simple and Stylish

Forget the idea that style means discomfort. You don’t need to wear heels or tailored pants to look put-together. When traveling breathable fabrics and neutral or soft colors should be your first choice. Think black joggers and a white shirt, a cardigan or cashmere wrap for layering and you are good to go. Then make your feet comfortable with stylish sneakers or loafers and even when you take them off they won’t feel sore.

Bonus: layers help you adjust to the ever-changing temperature onboard without looking like a walking blanket.

Upgrade Your Carry-On Game

This is your in-flight survival kit. Make it count.

Pack a small pouch with your in-flight essentials: hydrating face mist, moisturizer, lip balm, a mini deodorant, dry shampoo, and roll-on perfume. Throw in travel wipes and hand sanitizer because, well, planes are germ factories.

Pro move: bring a silk sleep mask and a quality neck pillow. Something structured that actually supports your neck.

Hydration Is Non-Negotiable

The cabin air is brutally dry. Don’t go for wine and coffee, bring a cute portable refillable bottle and ask the flight attendants to top it up instead of relying on the baby-size cups they hand out.

Also, use moisturizer before takeoff and reapply mid-flight. A facial mist can give you a much-needed refresh and make you feel semi-human during the tenth hour.

Timing Your Sleep (and Caffeine) Is Everything

This is very important, so you don’t get off looking exhausted. Set your watch to your destination’s time zone as soon as you board. Start syncing your sleep and meals accordingly.

If you want to take a nap, do it early in the flight. Save caffeine for when you’re trying to stay awake. And bring noise-canceling headphones or earplugs—because there’s always a crying baby somewhere.

Do a Quick Pre-Landing Refresh

About 45 minutes before landing, make a move.

Head to the bathroom with your essentials kit. Brush your teeth, splash your face, freshen up with wipes, touch up with a tinted moisturizer  or concealer, and swipe on lip balm or a tinted gloss. Smoothen your hair with your fingers or brush and use a conditioner if needed.

You’ll step off the plane looking far more awake than you feel.

Pack an “Arrival Outfit” in Your Personal Item

Even if you don’t want to change mid-flight, having a fresh shirt or blouse, clean socks, or even a different top layer can work wonders. You’d be surprised what a simple outfit swap does to your mindset after 12 hours in the same seat.
